ORANGE PARK GREAT HOUSE
Nothing quite prepares you for the moment you finally ascend the hill at Orange Park and take in the breathtaking views. Orange Park, home, studio and final resting place of the renowned Caribbean artist Barrington Watson, is one of those unique spots in Jamaica where you can simultaneously take in intoxicating views of the mountains and the sea. Spend a few minutes taking in Yallah’s Bay from the landing and you immediately understand why one of the foremost artists in Jamaican history made this his home and artistic haven.
Located high in the hills of the parish of St. Thomas, 39km from the Jamaican capital of Kingston, the expansive vistas and quaint accommodations leave visitors with the impression of being a small but meaningful part of something much bigger than themselves. One likes to think Barrington’s spirit still resides here in his studio, teaching and guiding new generations of artists. Nudging them to embrace their birthright in the place he curated his artistic legacy. Assuring them that there is still so much to be created and celebrated and that Orange Park is the perfect place to do it!
An old Great House lovingly restored and decorated by the artist, Orange Park is now open to all so that you too may experience the history, peace, creativity, and natural beauty that inspired some of Jamaica’s greatest creatives. A truly spectacular destination in Jamaica - you don’t have to be an artist to appreciate the property. Orange Park is the perfect setting for weddings, parties, retreats or simply to rest and rejuvenate. Tucked into one of the cozy cottages or rooms, one can recharge in comfort while being inspired by the peaceful vastness of the surrounding nature.
THE BARRINGTON WATSON LEGACY
The Orange Park property, once a Great House dating back to the days of African enslavement, was reclaimed and renovated by Barrington Watson. The 400-year-old property was perfect for an artist whose style melds traditional technique with Caribbean flavor. The property is a reflection of the man and there is no other place that so perfectly encapsulates his process, his paintings, and his personality
